I got a 2023 Born and I'm a bit confused on how sw upgrades worked/works. Right now I'm on 0561, to recive 1701 I need a dealer or will it arrive through OTA at some point?

You're not going to get 1701 as OTA. AFAIK that was only from the factory.

What all of us with pre -MY2025 Borns are waiting for is update OUL9 aka 3.5.2 which will be displayed on the infotainment unit at 1751 and is supposedly coming only as OTA. Keep in mind these updates will update many different control units, so the displayed software version, eg. 1751, represents the aggregate update.

Car is booked in for its 2 year service tomorrow and will also be asking them to apply all available software updates. Last time I spoke to them (in April) they told me my car had v3.2 and that was the latest version and it wasn't showing an update was available (car is November 2022).
3.5.x is compatible with pre-2025 model-year Borns. Software version 5.x is for all 2025 Borns and uses different hardware.

Whether your dealer will upgrade it or not is up to their discretion. I've heard of a few recent cases where the dealership did it, but frankly it seems unlikely.

Technically we're all waiting on OUL9 3.5.2 as an OTA as of KW46 - well, except for one person in Spain that posted about receiving it.

I read that if the OUL9 OTA update fails, then the dealership can manually install it and it's then called 3.5.3.
Dropped off today and they said it was due a software update.....to 3.2 (which it's already on?). So I'll see what it comes back with when they have actually updated it.

They gave me a 2024 Born loan car, it appears to be running 3.5.x (software 1741). On a limited play on my drive home doesn't seem to be much better in any noticeable way. Hoping they may have improved responsiveness but guess you need the MY2025 hardware for that. So guess as long as they can fix some of the software niggles whether they do any major update now is probably not much of a concern.

They also told me they cannot install the OTA updates.

That's correct. However, there are more or less equivalent software versions that can alternatively be installed in the workshop. As I mentioned, if 3.5.2 OTA fails to install correctly, then the workshop can install 3.5.3.

Here's the catch: most workshops when looking through the VW software distribution server will need a specific SVM code, aka "Software Versions Management" - and it's not going to be referred to as 3.5.3.

It's so simple!

Nothing is simple regarding versioning when there are over 30 ECUs.

The 3.5.2 OTA is starting to roll out in Europe as of last week. Some owners have confirmed the the touchscreen display lag has noticeably improved.

My Born was updated to 3.5.2 OTA over the weekend here in Berlin.

Everything works as expected and there are no more audio dropouts with my Beats sound system.

The update rollout is scheduled in batches. If yours has been scheduled for an update, when you turn off the ignition of your vehicle the goodbye screen will show the update option. You have to make sure your windows are rolled up (sometimes it helps to roll them down then up completely) and that the interior lights are switched off.

Do you notice any improvement in the responsiveness of the touch screen? Also, does it fix the bug where the "reduce speaker volume when doors open" setting is forgotten each time you start the car? Those are the two things that most irritate me, along with the Infotainment system often needing to be restarted after starting the car because it gets into a "frozen" state.

1. No, the setting to reduce volume when opening the doors is not saved. As expected :?

2. Yeah, the touch response is somewhat better. I haven't tested enough to say how much, but all I know is that the Komponentenschutz (automotive ECU component protection) was supposed to have been modified to allow faster communication between the display and the ICAS3 infotainment unit.

I don't use Android Auto or Carplay so I can't verify claims from others that those load quicker after the update.

Here's what was updated on mine (non-eBoost) and please keep in mind the part numbers change when the software is upgraded:
